One of the first things that Kirkintilloch High School, East Dunbartonshire did to reduce the cost of the school day was to buy a big cabinet, with lots of nooks and crannies, visible and hidden shelves, and put it where everyone has access.
The Preparation Station contains everything that young people might need at school, from stationery to study guides to period products. It's a resource that anyone can use and is designed to be easy to access but discreet so that young people don't feel embarrassed and don't have to go and ask for items.
Head Teacher Maureen Daniel outlines the main advantages of this approach:
“We didn’t want the children to be too visible taking things. Although it’s in the front entrance it’s to the side so it’s not too visible. The office are able to see when they need to refill and discreetly monitor it to see if there’s a child going in an awful lot so that other supports can be put in place for that family.”
