About this course
The benefits system is a decisions-based system. This course gives advisers the technical understanding needed to successfully navigate it, by explaining in detail the rules about how a decision can be made and then changed.
The course covers:
- Decisions, revisions and supersessions in overview
- How mandatory reconsideration fits into this system
- Time limits and grounds
- The effective dates of different decisions, and how to challenge failures to pay arrears
- When to consider a new benefit claim, and how this could affect (or be affected by) an ongoing dispute
- When to consider judicial review
This course explains the jargon and takes a practical, problem-solving approach to navigating Chapter 2 of the Social Security Act 1998.
Method of delivery and timings
This full-day equivalent, advanced-level course, is delivered online via Zoom over two consecutive mornings. It runs from 10am to 1pm on each day, with a half hour break between 11.15am-11.45am.
It is a practical course delivered using a combination of trainer presentation, exercises and group discussion. Participants will need a Wi-Fi connection and a suitable device to access the internet. It is not recommended to join via a mobile phone.
