This one-day standard level online course looks at tackling the challenges claiming Personal Independence Payment presents for people who are Deaf*, have a hearing impairment, a visual impairment or both.
It will equip you to advise clients on how to deal with the activities for daily living and mobility with reference to the relevant PIP regulations and how to interpret and apply the effects of a claimant’s Deafness or hearing/visual impairment on their ability to carry out the activities.
The course covers:
- the PIP activities and how, in particular, PIP regulations 4(a) and regulation 7 should be applied in relation to sensory impairment;
- the problems - and possibilities - faced by claimants with conditions that cause sensory impairment;
- how best to go about challenging adverse decisions on claims relating to the above;
- how to best gather effective medical evidence for MR and appeal in relation to sensory impairment;
- a detailed look at the caselaw relevant to sensory impairment.
This course is aimed specifically at advisers working with claimants who are Deaf or have a hearing or visual impairment. It is a practical course delivered using a combination of trainer presentation, exercises and group discussion, with a strong emphasis, particularly in the second session, on case study work.
As part of the course, the participants would receive a detailed glossary of the caselaw relating to sensory impairment to enable them to challenge adverse decisions going forward.

*Deaf with a capital D, usually refers to Deaf people who are British Sign Language (BSL) users.
Method of delivery and timings
This standard-level course is delivered online via Zoom over two consecutive mornings. It runs from 10am to 1pm on each day, with a half hour break between 11.15am-11.45am.
It is a practical course delivered using a combination of trainer presentation, exercises and group discussion. Participants will need a Wi-Fi connection and a suitable device to access the internet. It is not recommended to join via a mobile phone.
