Understanding the benefits system can make a big difference to your work: in the public sector, housing, charities, think-tanks and beyond.
This essential two-morning course is aimed at non-benefit advisers who need a clear and practical introduction to the system.
It provides an overview of the different types of benefits, who can get them, and how to claim. It explains concepts like the benefit cap, bedroom tax and two-child limit, and helps non-advisers to spot missing entitlements. It also introduces the basics on challenging benefit decisions.
The course covers topics including:
- The different categories of benefits
- An introduction to universal credit
- Personal independence payment and other disability benefits
- Child benefit and other entitlements for families
- Help with housing costs
Method of delivery and timings
This full-day equivalent, introductory-level course, is delivered online via Zoom over two consecutive mornings. It runs from 10am to 1pm on each day, with a half hour break between 11.15am-11.45am.
It is a practical course delivered using a combination of trainer presentation, exercises and group discussion. Participants will need a Wi-Fi connection and a suitable device to access the internet. It is not recommended to join via a mobile phone.
