The universalism multiplier
CPAG and the National Education Union (NEU) have conducted surveys and interviews across two London boroughs which offered free school meals (FSM) to all children during the 2022/2023 academic year.
This report shows how universal FSM entitlement affects parents' experiences of school and home life, and school staff experiences of educating children. The interviews and survey responses conducted demonstrate six impacts of universal FSM entitlement:
- Financial and psychological security
- Improved nutrition and school engagement
- Reduction in stigma and social exclusion
- Improved home/school relationships
- Changed eating habits
- A richer school life.
