CPAG's response to Labour's mission
Commenting on Labour’s announcement of its mission: Breaking Down the Barriers to Opportunity, Chief Executive of Child Poverty Action Group Alison Garnham said:
We welcome Labour’s commitment to setting up a cross government task force with a focus on reducing child poverty. Child poverty has ripped through our country, with numbers now reaching 4.2 million children and only set to rise. This must end now-- there is too much at stake in allowing our children to endure poverty. We know that there are tried and tested solutions that reduce child poverty when governments work strategically across departments and get more money to families. And we know that there are commitments that can be made now that would lift hundreds of thousands of children out of poverty overnight —such as scrapping the two-child limit and the benefit cap. If the UK’s leaders fail to make those commitments, the toll will be dire.
