CPAG's briefing on the child poverty strategy
On 5 December, the government published the long-awaited, UK-wide cross-government child poverty strategy. The strategy contains a number of new policies to tackle child poverty, as well as previously-announced policies introduced since the government’s election last year. Taken collectively, the key policies in the strategy will deliver transformative change for some of the country’s poorest children and their families.
This briefing sets out our response to the key announcements in the strategy (including policies already announced by government) under its three core pillars:
1. Boosting family income
2. Driving down the costs of essentials
3. Strengthening local support for families
It also looks at how the strategy will be delivered.
This briefing does not cover every policy contained in the strategy. Instead, we focus on those measures that will make the most difference to families, and areas where government action can best be taken next to ensure sustained reductions in child poverty over the long term.
