Job start payment legislation and guidance

Date:
19 November 2020

Job start payment was introduced on 17 August 2020.

There are no rules in regulations. Some limits on who can get a Job start payment are set out in the Employment and Training Act 1973. Whilst this Act is the responsibility of the UK government, limited powers were devolved to the Scottish parliament in 2020 to enable job start payment to be introduced.

Read s2 of the Employment and Training Act 1973 on legislation.gov.uk.

Read Article 2 of The Scotland Act 1998 (Transfer of Functions to the Scottish Ministers etc.) Order 2020 on legislation.gov.uk.

Most of the job start payment rules are only set out in guidance published by Social Security Scotland. This guidance can be updated at any time, so it is important to check that it has not changed.
