Using Medical Evidence in Benefit Appeals, 27 & 28 February 2024 ONLINE

This course looks at how to use medical evidence effectively, particularly in Personal Independence Payment, Disability Living Allowance and Universal Credit Appeals. 

It considers how to deal with the traps and pitfalls appellants commonly encounter after disclosing GP notes and specialist letters. It informs advocates and advisers how to make best use of medical evidence. It examines what the tribunal is looking for, and how to ensure your client gets the maximum benefit from medical evidence obtained.

The course covers:

• What medical evidence should be obtained
• How to obtain medical evidence (without payment)
• What the tribunal is looking for – and how to get it
• Anticipating, and helping your client deal with, difficult questions that the Tribunal are likely to ask
• Using medical evidence to show the functional limitations which are likely to lead to an award

This course is aimed at anyone who helps people to prepare welfare benefit appeals. Learning on this course will be practical, and mostly by way of case studies and exercises, involving appeal bundles and medical note simulating real appeals in which medical evidence is presented.

Method of delivery and timings

This full-day standard level course will be delivered online via Zoom over two consecutive mornings. It runs from 10am to 1pm on each day, with a half hour break between 11.15-11.45.

It is a practical course delivered using a combination of trainer presentation, exercises and group discussion. Participants will need a Wi-Fi connection and a suitable device to access the internet. It is not recommended to join via a mobile phone. Participants will receive an email a few days before the start of the course, with a link to the event hosted on our AskCPAG elearning platform.
