Universal Credit for Disabled People, 11 & 12 March 2024 ONLINE

This one-day experienced level online course looks at the universal credit (UC) rules that particularly affect ill or disabled people.

It will equip you to advise clients about the transfer to UC, whether through ‘managed’ or ‘natural’ migration. You will also explore how the work capability assessment affects UC and the effect of working for disabled people claiming the benefit.

The course covers:

• The latest rules on when disabled people may have to claim UC, and the consequences of claiming, including backdating rules
• When a transitional element may apply (including transitional SDP)
• Transitional rules for those moving from employment and support allowance
• How to deal with work capability assessment problems and challenge decisions on limited capability for work
• The consequences of work capability assessment outcomes in UC
• How work affects the UC award for disabled claimants
• How other disability benefits may affect UC claimants

This course is aimed at advisers with knowledge and experience of advising on UC.

Please note this course will not cover the interactions with Scottish benefits, for example, Scottish disability benefits and rules on passporting, some of which are specific to Scotland.

Method of delivery and timings

This full-day experienced level course will be delivered online via Zoom over two consecutive mornings. It runs from 10am to 1pm on each day, with a half hour break between 11.15-11.45.

It is a practical course delivered using a combination of trainer presentation, exercises and group discussion. Participants will need a Wi-Fi connection and a suitable device to access the internet. It is not recommended to join via a mobile phone. Participants will receive an email a few days before the start of the course, with a link to the event hosted on our AskCPAG elearning platform.
