Submission to Work & Pensions Committee inquiry into benefit sanctions

Post date:

The Work and Pensions Committee is currently undertaking an inquiry into benefit sanctions policy, considering aspects of sanctions policy which were outside the remit of the Oakley Review.

In our submission to the Committee, we argue that the way sanctions currently operate is not only unjust, but does not work – not for the government, not for the labour market, and not for claimants. We call for an end to fixed-term sanctions; improved communications; mitigation of impacts while sanctions are being reconsidered; the addressing of particular issues around process; and increased access to hardship payments when people are sanctioned.
