Today we and Children North East have sent an open letter to the Secretary of State for Education Gavin Williamson MP, which lays out a set of guiding principles that we advise the government to use to make decisions about home education during this lockdown period. We urge the government to take the following actions to ensure we get it right this time for children and families:

  • Prioritise cash payments to families as a replacement for free school meals.
  • Take urgent action to ensure all children have the learning tools they need to take part in the curriculum.
  • Provide families with greater financial support to cover the increased costs they are facing as a result of the pandemic, including costs related to home learning.
