This is the first in-depth study into the personal experiences of recipients of emergency food aid in the UK. While UK-wide policy is pushing up the use of food banks, interviews carried out in Scotland also highlight a role for the Scottish Government and local authorities in preventing income crisis. A new research report, commissioned by Defra and published on their website today, states that the evidence points to there being genuine need for food aid in Britain today. The report arrived on the same day as 27 Church of England Bishops wrote to the Prime Minister and warned that coalition policies are creating hardship and hunger.
